INTERNSHIP: Drylands Conservation Programme Riverine Rabbit Internship - EWT - 24 February 2016

Purpose of the Position: The Endangered Wildlife Trust is one of the largest biodiversity conservation NGOs in southern Africa and is offering an internship position which will expose the candidate to experience working in the conservation sector and will allow them to learn important skills for furthering a career in conservation. This position will be responsible for providing assistance and support for core conservation work within the programme, including activities such as administrative support, operational conservation support, fieldwork assistance with rehabilitation and species research, and a wide variety of other interesting and challenging tasks. This position will be based in Loxton in the Karroo.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

 Assisting with seed germinability and viability research at the Indigenous Karoo Plant Nursery, particularly the record keeping aspect and microscope methodology.

 Assisting with Karoo riparian rehabilitation fieldwork, including fairly strenuous physical work during rehabilitation, planting Karoo shrubs and seeds, harvesting seeds, and watering plants.

 Assisting with Riverine Rabbit demographic fieldwork during species monitoring, including aiding with remote camera trap surveys, data processing and updating the RR camera trap dataset.

 Assisting with the digitization and mapping of biodiversity features on Riverine Rabbit Conservancies.  Updating the desktop literature surveys of rehabilitation and stewardship research every 6 months.

 Assisting with Programme related monitoring and data capturing, statistical analyses and report-writing.

 Research communications, including developing a farmer’s newsletter and Karoo Nursery communications, and assisting with the development and design of the popular Riverine Rabbit newsletter.

 Attending workshops and meetings and assisting in reporting on work-related activities.

 Develop a long-term awareness programme with the JJ Booysen Primary School in Loxton (year plan for Assembly presentation and Grade specific portfolios).

 Ongoing work with the Grade 4 environmental awareness programme. Finalise the draft portfolio, including lesson plans, module content and materials lists. Drafting additional portfolios for Grades 2, 6 and 7.

 Administrative duties associated with the above.
