TRAVELLING BY RAIL REDUCES YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Gautrain is a world class rail network for Gauteng. A key objective of Gautrain is the alleviation of traffic congestion in the Gauteng area; specifically on the Johannesburg – Tshwane corridor and the corridor towards to OR Tambo International Airport.

Gauteng, the country’s economic hub, is currently experiencing traffic congestion on its major routes, especially between Tshwane and Johannesburg as the current transport facilities and services between these two cities are mainly road based. Apart from alleviating the severe traffic congestion, Gautrain have distinct environmental advantages over other forms of transport.

Considering that traffic volumes are escalating by 7% per year in the economically active corridors in Gauteng, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from road based vehicles will increasingly contribute to global warming.

Travelling by rail reduces your contribution to climate change. Using rail, CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre are, on average, approximately half that of travelling by car.

Running at full capacity, Gautrain is thus a much greener transport option.
