FABI was established at the University of Pretoria in 1997 and was based on recognition that the future of Forestry and Agriculture in South Africa would depend strongly on the incorporation of new technologies into these industries.

In 2004 FABI was chosen to house one of the six Centres of Excellence selected by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the National Research Foundation (NRF). This DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Tree Health Biotechnology (CTHB) has a primary focus on the health of native South African trees and the protection of local biodiversity.
