The Environmental Engineering Group (EEG) was established in 1999 as part of the University of Pretoria's Department of Chemical Engineering. The group provides postgraduate training to candidates in both government and industry via its environmental engineering degree programme and short courses. The group focuses its postgraduate courses, research and industrial activities on those issues unique to the South African environment.

Postgraduate degree programme

The postgraduate programme of the Environmental Engineering Group offers the following degrees: BEng(Hons) and MEng Environmental Engineering for students with a BEng or equivalent qualification, and the BSc(Hons)(App.Sci) and MSc(App.Sci) for students with an acceptable B-degree. Master’s degrees are offered through dissertations to students who have achieved an average of at least 60% for their Honours studies.

The following basic modules are presented for the Honours degree:

 

  • Principles of Environmental Engineering CEM 780 
  • Air Quality Control CAM 780/787 
  • Water Quality Management WQB 780/787
  • Industrial Waste Engineering WAI 780/787

 

Short courses

Short courses are presented to general and functional personnel in an organisation wishing to obtain updated and relevant environmental education on a yearly basis:

 

  • Environmental Management 
  • Waste Management 
  • Air Quality Management

 

Research

 

  • Environmental management in a First/Third world developing country. 
  • Development of water management models for industrial activities. 
  • Development of air dispersion modelling software for emissions from industries. 
  • Waste management assessments and investigations. 
  • Chemical stability of water.
