Vacancy: Field Fisheries Officers - 19 October 2016

The Rural Fisheries Programme (RFP) of the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science of Rhodes University is implementing an experimental fishery on a Dam in the Northern Cape Province with a view of exploring the potential of a small scale community based fishery.

A plan to implement the experimental fishery has been developed through a consultative process.

There is an opening for a Field Fisheries Officer (FFO) to work with the small-scale fishers and to implement the experimental fishery.

The tasks of the FFO include:

 

  • coordinating the implementation of the plan
  • gathering data
  • liaising with the stakeholders
  • providing support to the fishers in processing and marketing of the fish and in coordinating training for the fishers.

 

The applicant needs to have a minimum of a BSc or Hons degree, have some experience with fisheries and be able to work with small-scale fishers in a rural setting.

The salary scale is between 25 and 30K per month (inclusive package) depending on experience and qualifications. The contract is for one year ­ with possibility for extensions.
