Kulula's Greening Intitiative takes flight - SA’S first airline to partner with FTFA - 4 September 2008
On 16 April, 2008 kulula formally launched Project Green, an initiative to offset the airline’s carbon emissions through innovative community-based environmental projects.
At a tree planting ceremony at Monde Primary School in Katlehong, Kulula announced a partnership with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), South Africa’s greening and natural rood gardening public benefit organisation that has also taken a lead in climate change awareness and action through the Carbon Standard.
The aim of Project Green is to plant trees and grass in new and deteriorated developments, including landscaping projects at school playgrounds in rural and township communities throughout South Africa. The first initiative implemented with FTFA through Project Green is the greening of the historic mining city of Ekurhuleni where kulula’s head office is situated, and will go national in the near future with the planting of thousands of trees in the company’s efforts to green South Africa.
How Project Green works:When making a booking on kulula.com, passengers can make a donation toward planting trees where they are needed. A number of donation options are available to consumers from R10 to R200. Since December 1, 2007 kulula.com has raised more than R300 000 by encouraging customers to donate funds towards Project Green when making online bookings. According to Nadine Damen, Marketing Manager of kulula.com, “We are South Africa’s greenest airline and want to play an active role in preserving the natural environment.” From an operational perspective, kulula recently upgraded its fleet with more modern and fuel-efficient Boeing 737-400 aircraft. “We are aware of the contribution that air travel makes to the carbon emissions released into the atmosphere, and as a responsible airline, have been looking at ways to reduce its harmful effects on the environment. In partnership with government departments and NGOs on Project Green we also expect to create work opportunities as part of our tree planting activities.”
Jeunesse Park, founder of FTFA adds: “We commend kulula for this initiative to address climate change, as well as improving the environment and quality of life for those living in underserved South African townships. We look forward to planting thousands more trees with the support of kulula.com customers.”
The event at Monde Primary School in Katlehong saw kulula and FTFA plant 50 indigenous trees in an effort to create a playground for the learners of the school.
kulula.com is celebrating National Arbor Week on the 2nd of September by planting 45 trees at Marhulana Primary School in Tembisa, north of Johannesburg, as another Project Green initiative. Whilst Project Green works to distribute trees throughout the year, Arbor Week is important as it is a national initiative to promote awareness of the value and importance of trees in our lives and a time to focus on what individuals can to address climate change.
Another 735 trees have already been planted in schools across the country in Limpopo, the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape, Free State and Gauteng as kulula.com and their passengers green South Africa.
