Green Building Retrofitting Seminar - 3 March 2008

10 April, 2008 will see the coming together, across three major urban centres, of the various major stakeholders in the built environment, to discuss ways to remove impediments to retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency.

Never before in SA have the imperatives to retrofit buildings for energy efficiency been so compelling. In the short term we need to ensure uninterrupted productive output, and in the medium to long term we are facing sharp increases in the price of electricity and mounting pressure to minimise carbon emissions.

The Retrofitting Seminar will be video linked between Cape Town, Durban and the Gauteng Mega-City, and will attract property owners, property managers, major commercial tenants, financiers, city management, energy companies, energy efficiency practitioners, built environment professionals and other stakeholders.

The program for the one-day event will include talks from high-level speakers about retrofitting from their varying perspectives and experience. These talks will be broadcast to all venues by video conferencing.

Speakers include Llewellyn Van Wyk of the CSIR, who will present his thoughts on the impediments and opportunities within each property category.

Sandile Maphumulo from the City of eThekwini will display case studies of retrofitting in the public building zone, and John L Less, the City Director of Clinton Climate Initiative will follow with a talk on how the CCI Energy Efficiency Building Retrofit Programme works.

Philip Olejnik from Dimension Data will show case studies of the effect of retrofitting in the commercial zone with an example of a multi building commercial development.

Energy saving opportunities in industrial buildings shall be talked about by Energy Manager from the Magnet Group, Graeme Harding. V&A Waterfront Company’s Colin Devenish will follow with case studies on retrofitting of commercial shopping centres.

In the afternoon, retrofitting workshops will be held in each city. The workshop is run by a professional facilitator and lead by a panel of experts and stakeholders from various perspectives. Star panellists include Minister Tasneem Essop in Cape Town; Dr Michael Sutcliffe in eThekwini; and John L Less in Gauteng.

Throughout the day, exhibits will be held in each cities conference centres. The exhibits will demonstrate products which can assist with retrofitting.

The organisers, Green Building Media and Events are known for their other conference, the Green Building Conference and Exhibition, which takes place later in the year. The event takes place over two days and will be held at Wits this year, in Johannesburg.
